After the election of the new freshmen and junior batch representatives and the appointment of a Councilor for Secretariat, the School of Economics Student Council (SESC) 2010 – 2011 is now set to go full force to turn on the econ!

Freshemen Stefanie Su and JP delas Nieves, plus junior Carissa Sta. Maria and senior Miguel Ruffy are joining the ranks of the erstwhile sixteen officers, following the elections and appointment held in the last two weeks of June.

Last June 23, Stef and JP bested three others, earning 64 and 42 votes respectively from a total of 101. Ruffy was also proclaimed Secretariat Councilor following a vote of 6-5 among present SESC officers.

On June 29 meanwhile, Car was elected with a decisive 69-3 win against abstention.

The positions of Junior Batch Representative and Councilor for Secretariat were vacated following the resignation of Horace Cimafranca and Noreen Apuhin.

Horace and Noreen have since been appointed as Freshmen Ad Hoc Chairperson and Volunteer Corps Ad Hoc Chairperson respectively.

As of this writing, the SESC is still searching for a Graduate School Representative. Interested MA or PhD students of the School may approach any SESC officer or Tita Connie of SE 101 for inquiries.

Meanwhile, the new officers are now gearing up for the upcoming batch month and Schoolympics preliminaries!

The brown door on the right side wall going to the computer lab beholds a secret so magnificent, so powerful that we just had to make an article about it. So what is the secret? There is IDEA behind it, or more specifically, Institute for Development and Econometric Analysis. But there is more to it than just a label, and with the help of an interview with a research assistant (RA), Arjay Bautista, and a student assistant (SA), Maan Espinosa, we will soon discover what it is.

First question that comes to mind is, “What does IDEA do?” Well, Kuya Arjay has an answer to just that. IDEA is an “economics think-tank that specializes on market and macroeconomic research”. Not only that, they also publish a series of publications; on the side they do meetings by their esteemed members such as Prof. Paderanga. When that is not enough, we ask what it is like to work for IDEA. Not only is IDEA a small company, but it also has a small office which means the workers here are very close. You can tell by the way they tease each other, laugh at their jokes and simply entering the light yet serious atmosphere at their office. But fun doesn’t always mean relax because RAs and SAs have clients to please and deadlines to meet. Data doesn’t come from trees, you know.

However, the [benefits may outweigh the demands] of working in IDEA. For one, it “exposes you to different kinds of information and data”. Doing research gives you a different perspective on things you take for granted before. It is also good “training for graduate school studies”. As for us students, we could get to apply the theories, terms and lessons from our econ classes. The knowledge could go beyond notebooks and the classroom; in fact, being an SA helps with academics more than it interferes! And of course, we could learn to manage our time better.

Although Mr. Bautista, and perhaps the rest of the RAs, confesses that being an RA isn’t the most rewarding job financially and that there is “temptation to look for greener pastures”, working for IDEA still has perks over working for a big company such as having better opportunities to balance work with other things you want to do. As for Maan, even though her workload as a student is heavier because of IDEA, she would not have realized her future career path or learn something new about herself if she was not an IDEA SA in the first place.

In a span of 28 minutes, questions have been answered, curiosities have been satisfied and new knowledge has been acquired. If the readers are interested in joining Arjay and Maan in IDEA, just go to the door going to the Computer Lab and make sure you satisfy these requirements:

For an SA:
·         minimum 1.75 GWA
·         at least Junior standing
·         proficient in writing
·         background in economic theory and dynamics

For an RA:
·         With MA units or MA candidates or graduate
·         With degree from Statistics or Economics

Goes the Now Generation.

The University of the Philippines School of Economics (UPSE) freshmen of AY 2010 – 2011 last June 7 marked their first day in the University in You are the Now Generation: The UPSE Freshmen Orientation 2010.

With the aid of the School of Economics Student Council (SESC) officers, Councilor for Media and Publicity Patrick Santos piloted the event, which lifted off with a series of lively and interactive introduction to university life with hosts Carlo Go and Joyce Ruiz.

Presiding Dean Prof. Gwendolyn Tecson gave the welcoming remarks, which was later followed by videos and performances by the seven UPSE-based organizations plus a side-splitting skit by the UP Repertory Company.

Seatbelts unfastened and ice broken, the freshmen later flew to their blocks whom they were meeting for the very first time. An afternoon of fun and bonding was in store as no less than the senior explorers sat in to be stewards of the freshie flight.

These upperclassmen volunteers rawr-ed (in the event’s Facebook page) to ensure every yellow-shirt clad freshman present was on a first class trip to becoming henyo’s in the in’s and out’s of their turbulent journey ahead.

Meanwhile, the shiftees and transferees too were undergoing their own orientation at SE 125.

Avocado, cheese, plus cookies and cream ice cream in hand, the freshmen and their senior explorers then proceeded to the last leg of the day trip – a tour of the academic oval.

A day of videos, names, games, and talks later however, there was no sight of a runway to arrive at – only clouds and then later a vast expanse yet to be explored.

This was the beginning of every college freshman’s flight towards a star-spangled universe that is the university.
